As Stoke-on-Trent marks its centenary in 2025, a landmark public art project is set to honour the people who have shaped the city over the past 100 years. The ‘100 Years, 100 Faces’ mural, funded and coordinated by Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID, will be a collaborative tribute, set for unveiling this autumn.
Residents and communities across the city are invited to help shape this historic artwork by voting for the individuals to be featured. In partnership with key voices across the six towns, the initiative will highlight both well-known figures and unsung heroes who have contributed to Stoke-on-Trent’s story.
Jonathan Bellamy, Chairman of Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID, expressed the significance of the project: “We are calling on the expertise of all communities in Stoke-on-Trent. This mural is about uncovering hidden histories and honouring those who have dedicated their lives to our city. The BID is committed to celebrating 100 years of Stoke-on-Trent by showcasing stories that are woven into the fabric of our community.”
From community champions to cultural icons, the public will play a key role in selecting the faces that represent the past, present, and future of Stoke-on-Trent. The mural’s unveiling will coincide with a celebratory weekend featuring live music, arts performances, and more.
Cheryl Taylor, Theatre Director at Regent Theatre & Victoria Hall, will be working alongside local groups to identify potential honourees: “I’m delighted to be part of the ‘100 Faces’ mural. It’s an honour to collaborate with the BID team on such an important project. Our goal is to celebrate some of the most influential Stokies while also shining a light on lesser-known individuals who have contributed to the city’s successes. By sharing these remarkable stories, we hope to create a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations to take pride in our heritage and keep the heart of our city beating stronger than ever.”
A dedicated book will be launched alongside the mural, offering further insight into each featured individual and recognising other key figures in the city’s history. ‘100 Years, 100 Faces’ is just one of many initiatives celebrating Stoke-on-Trent’s centenary in 2025.
Following a public voting period from 25 February to 28 March, the mural will be brought to life by local artists Rob Fenton and Alastair Barnett, known for their 2023 mural commemorating Shelton Bar Steelworks. The final selections will be revealed on Stoke-on-Trent Day, 5 June 2025.
